Through the generosity of our customers, the Case has always supported fund raising activities for a wide range of charities. However, starting 17th April 2019, the pub’s management committee decided to formalise this and adopted a policy of selecting a different charity each year as a named Charity Of The Year which we would then support as the primary focus of our charitable fund raising efforts for the following 12 months. The significance of 17th April is that this is our anniversary of re-opening as a community owned pub.
This is not to say we would then exclude the idea of supporting other charities at specific events. For example, we’ve supported the Macmillan Coffee Mornings in September for longer than we’ve had a Charity Of The Year and have regularly raised more than £1000 for the Macmillan Cancer Care charity in a single morning.
But for our first formal Charity Of The Year (COTY), we selected FIND – Families In NeeD – a local Ipswich based charity that a number of volunteers and customers at the pub had involvement with. The next COTY was intended to be the Samaritans, again a charity suggested by pub clientele. Unfortunately, this didn’t pan out quite as expected as Covid arrived before the change of COTY could take place on 17th April 2020, with the pub going into full lockdown in March 2020. In fact after multiple lockdowns and the suspension of events across the board, it wasn’t until 17th April 2023 that the Samaritans finally become our COTY and the fund raising events that had been planned for 2020 actually went ahead.
However, in the meantime, we had still been able to run the occasional social event such as a quiz night which typically included a raffle for charity and for this interim period, St Elizabeth’s Hospice became our ‘de facto’ COTY although this ended up being more like 18 months of stop/start activity rather than a year per se.
Since then things have thankfully settled down and after supporting the Alzheimer’s Society for a year, we are now onto our 5th Charity Of The Year – EACH – East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, again suggested by pub clientele. Information on all the charities we have supported is provided below, together with links to key posts giving info on activities organised and the money raised as a result.
If you have a charity that is close to your heart and would wish it to be considered as a possible Case COTY in the future, in the first instance please contact the chair of our management committee. As of April 2025, we have been able to raise in excess of £13,000 for our charities of the year and we hope to be able to continue to add to this in the future.
If you’re interested in how much has been raised for charity by individual events, once the dust has settled, we usually add a footnote to the end of posts for significant charitable events to provide this information. For example, see posts such as: VE Day Remembrance and Celebrations 2025, Macmillan Coffee Morning: 27th Sept 2025 or New Year’s Eve Disco: 31st Dec 2025 for recent examples.
